Strathursday - Episode 1 Recap - Marching with the Eagles at RTS Guru
"March of the Eagles features victory conditions, with regions as my goal to capture. I cannot win via diplomacy or talking.. it has to be war.
To "win" at March of the Eagles is no easy thing, with my three current games seemingly recoiling in horror I've yet to win, but I'll keep trying."

Strathursday - Episode 1 Recap - Marching with the Eagles
Yesterday Alex "Farske" Brown sat down to host a new show bringing together RTSGuru and Paradox Interactive named "RTSGuru Strathursday" | The show looked at upcoming title March of the Eagles Beta with an angle for newcomers.

Yesterday Alex "Farske" Brown sat down with Paradox Interactive Chris King and Matt Hoving in the new monthly show RTSGuru Strathursday. Farske, Chris and Matt played through March of the Eagles and discussed the game, features and comparisons to other Paradox titles.
March of the Eagles is a Grand Strategy game focused on purely war. Hand in hand with other popular Paradox titles such as Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron. March of the Eagles has an in depth system focused on the Napoleonic era.
Taking control of a nation of your choice the game starts in 1805. Starting in Russia, the game launched straight into a detailed game screen. The first thing to note was the fantastic tips and hints. Across the entire UI are tiny "!" and "?" which allow the user to click an exc**tion mark to reveal a pop up hint system. The intuitive and interactive system was noted as brand new tip system for a Paradox Game which was noted to be a huge improvement over a recent "static" hint system in Crusader Kings 2. The hints allowed the mind boggling UI to have clear, concise and straight to the point hint system. This has been invaluable for a newbie like myself to get my head around exactly what was going on.
The UI offered a very obvious message system with flags popping up on the side alongside set sections to easily at a glance identify what was happening in the world. Along the top had alerts and reminders to encourage decisions.

March of the Eagles features victory conditions, with regions as my goal to capture. I cannot win via diplomacy or talking.. it has to be war. To "win" at March of the Eagles is no easy thing, with my three current games seemingly recoiling in horror I've yet to win but I'll keep trying. Starting as the Russians I easily identified I needed to capture a few more land pieces and at the same time remove my opponents hold on their objective based regions.
The map system offered multiple views spanning from a beautiful "terrain" view to dominance, economy, and so on. The system allowed quick immediate information in various views. I was able to ascertain quickly which provinces provided me with money, and which provided me with men. The two main resources in March of Eagles.
Taking Russia by the reins it was revealed that Persia was already at war with my glorious motherland and so Persia obviously was my first target. COSSACKS FORWARD!

The army system had various tiers of depth and with newbies in mind I touched briefly on the army system and soon discovered that I could assign leaders to lead my 3 flanks with 1 group in reserve. Tactics were available for each flank such as "Entrenched Defence" and had requirements such as "60% foot soldiers". Each flank fights individually but winning flanks would move across and support flanks still in battle.
The diplomacy system seems whilst deep, a simpler system to the related titles again echoing the initial goal of "This game is about WAR!".
Instead of research the game features Ideas. Idea points were obtainable by passive gain or fighting in battles. In fact losing battles awarded more idea points. Ideas unlock and give bonuses across the board. Sometimes tactics, sometimes 5% increase in this or that. The idea system seemed a lot less daunting to comparable research but gave a real sense of advancement.
Battles were fought relatively simple with morale, supply and tactics all considered in each clash. Marching across the map the regions were split to "movement" and "town" regions. To capture areas it is necessary to capture towns, but it is important to remain a supply route by occupying regions.

Units develop experience as they fight and the generals develop traits giving your army a real personal feel. In addition to of course, clever management. Following the main goals of the company, Paradox have enabled full modability and modders will have the usual access to the game files.
At 58 minutes into the show Farske pulled up the Reddit questions left and asked about Sengoku, Release date, Multiplayer modes and confirmed that support for Steam and on the fly joining is not ready for March of the Eagles but an improved Multiplayer system is being developed for the future EU title.
